“Šargan Eight” is the most attractive tourist museum railway in Europe and is considered a unique construction masterpiece in the world among the narrow-gauge railway lines. It is a part of the old railway line that ran from Užice to Sarajevo and was launched in 1925. The construction of the railway immediately allowed ready access to the rest of the world for many mountain villages. It closed down in 1974 due to its state of disrepair and mounting losses. But starting in 1999, it has undergone a slow process of renovation and expansion, mainly thanks to the efforts of the villagers themselves. The most interesting feature of this railway route, that earned it fame and the name "The Šargan Eight", is the remarkable feat of engineering which spans a height of 300 m whit an extraordinary loop in the shape of a figure "8". The 15 km line from Mokra Gora to the Šargan-Vitasi station takes one down a zigzag route through tunnels and over 10 bridges with impressive views. Trains pulling old fashioned, wood panelled passengers cars pass through picturesque scenery and a series of small, romantic stations, making this a delightful and worthwhile journey.
