Tour description:

Day 1 Madrid/Barcelona - Belgrade

Departure from Madrid / Barcelona airport at the indicated time. Check-in and boarding on a regular flight to Belgrade. Arrival in Belgrade. Assistance at the airport and transfer to the hotel. Accommodation.

Day 2 Belgrade

Breakfast. Begin the sightseeing tour of Belgrade. A tour of the old town and visits to the museums. Belgrade is an ancient city that has existed for 7,000 years and is located at the confluence of two rivers, the Sava and the Danube. The Sava River flows from the west, and the Danube from the north of the country, joining at the beautiful confluence that frames the city, continuing to flow together toward the east. For many centuries, the Belgrade Fortress was used as a border and as protection against the conquerors who constantly attacked the city: Romans, Goths, Avars, Huns, Byzantines, Crusaders, Hungarians, Turks, and many others throughout its long history. The fortress was destroyed approximately sixty times. The ancient name of Belgrade was Singidunum. Documents from the 9th century AD have been found where the city was called "Alba Graeca" (The White City, which is exactly what its name means in Serbian). The Belgrade Fortress offers a magnificent panoramic view. On the other side of the rivers are New Belgrade, Zemun, and the Pannonian plain. Visit to Kalemegdan Park and the Belgrade Fortress, remnants of the ancient city of Singidunum. The city was founded by a Celtic tribe in the third century BC. Later, it was conquered by the Romans and became "the military border" between the Roman Empire and the Central European barbarians. Stroll along Prince Mihailo pedestrian street, where the atmosphere of past times combines with the charm of modern cafes, restaurants, and shops. Visit to the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral (Saborna crkva), built in 1837 in the late classical style with baroque elements, by order of Prince Miloš Obrenović. The church is dedicated to Archangel Michael. Lunch at a nearby restaurant. Visit to the Ethnographic Museum. The permanent exhibition "Folk Art in Serbia" includes typical costumes, tablecloths, rugs, agricultural tools, works of art, and furniture. Visit to the largest Orthodox church in the Balkans, the Temple of Saint Sava, built on the site where the Turkish Sinan Pasha burned the remains of Saint Sava. Although the church is open, the interior is still unfinished. In the afternoon, visit to Skadarlija, the bohemian quarter of the city. Although renovated, this pedestrian street retains its old buildings and the atmosphere of past times. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3 Belgrade - Vojvodina

After breakfast, departure and journey through the beautiful landscape of the Vojvodina plain. Visit to Fruška Gora mountain and its wooded hills along the Danube River. This region is famous for its vineyards and its 17 monasteries from the 15th and 16th centuries, which represent the spiritual heart of the Serbian nation. Arrival in Sremski Karlovci, where the sights include historical and artistic monuments: the Patriarchate, the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, the Roman Catholic Church, the Regional Museum, the First High School from 1790, and the famous and historic Chapel of Peace. Visit to the well-known wine cellars. Lunch at a typical restaurant. Tour of the Petrovaradin Fortress, located on the Danube and known as the "Gibraltar of the Danube" due to its strategic role throughout the centuries. Today, it serves as the Museum of the City of Novi Sad. Visit to a rural house with a wine tasting. Novi Sad was a border area during the great Austro-Turkish war, and today it is a cultural, economic, and commercial center. Visit to the Greek School, the old gallery and library of Matica Srpska, the Orthodox Cathedral with its famous iconostasis (1742-1880) and scenes from medieval history painted by the great Serbian painter Paja Jovanović. Visit to the Church of St. Nicholas, Almaska, the Church of the Assumption, and the Beljanski Museum. Arrival in Belgrade in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 4 Belgrade - Topola/Oplenac - Zlatibor

After breakfast, departure towards Topola and Oplenac. Topola is a city located in the heart of Šumadija, in the wine-growing region, known for its wine production. It was the center of many historical events during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Visit the city of Djordje Petrović Karađorđe (leader of the Serbs during the First Uprising), the mausoleum, and the famous monument to Karađorđe located in the center of the plateau, surrounded by the ruins of the fortress with three-story towers, built between 1811 and 1813. Visit the museums and the Church of the Virgin Mary. Lunch at a local restaurant.
On the hill of Oplenac, which rises above Topola, there is a tourist complex consisting of the Church of St. George, the mausoleum of the Karađorđević dynasty, and the large house of the Karađorđević royal family. The church houses famous mosaics, and the crypt contains the finest examples of fresco painting in Serbia. The relics of the Karađorđević dynasty are placed in the crypt. The mausoleum, built by King Petar I, is made of white marble from the nearby Venca mountain and Carrara marble from Italy. The house of Petar Karađorđević, built in 1912, was the summer residence of the king, and it is located in front of the church.
After the visit to Topola/Oplenac, departure to Zlatibor mountain in western Serbia, part of the Dinaric Alps. The name Zlatibor (ZLATI = gold, BOR = pine) means "Golden Pine," due to its pine forests. Zlatibor is a mountain known for its exceptional beauty, vast meadows, picturesque hills, rivers, and streams. Accommodation and dinner at the hotel.

Day 5 Zlatibor - Mokra gora - Zlatibor

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure towards Mokra Gora and Šargan Eight, a steam train built in 1925 as part of a railway connecting the western region of Serbia with the eastern Bosnian area. Over 13.5 kilometers of travel from the Šargan station in Mokra Gora, the train with a track width of only 0.76 meters ascends to an altitude of 450 meters. The route was constructed in a fun shape resembling the number “8.” Along the journey, the train crosses five bridges and passes through twenty tunnels. These types of trains began operating as a tourist attraction after their reconstruction in 1999.
After the ride, lunch at a traditional restaurant. Then, departure for Mecavnik – Drvengrad in Mokra Gora, about ten minutes away from Šarganska Osmica. We will see authentic houses brought from various parts of Serbia and Bosnia. There is also an art gallery, a library, and a cinema called “Underground,” a bakery selling homemade cookies, a local restaurant, and a workshop for local crafts. Mecavnik – Drvengrad was built under the patronage of UNICEF.
After this excursion, return to the hotel in Zlatibor for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6 Zlatibor - Monastery Mileseva - Sirogojno - Zlatibor

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure towards the Mileševa Monastery (13th century), founded between 1234 and 1243 by the Serbian king Vladislav. The monastery is located in the valley of the Mileševa River, near Prijepolje. In 1594, the Ottomans took the relics of Saint Sava from the Mileševa Monastery and publicly burned them on the Vračar hill in Belgrade, posthumously turning him into a martyr. The Mileševa Monastery was declared a cultural monument of exceptional importance in 1979.
Next, we continue to Sirogojno, located 24 kilometers from Zlatibor. This ethnographic village is an open-air museum, known as the "Old Village Museum." On its 15 hectares, wooden houses have been built. These are known as "Zlatibor Cabins," a type of house with authentic elements of family life collected from throughout the region, dating back to the 19th century. In Sirogojno, there is an authentic rural inn and several art and craft workshops where travel souvenirs are made. We will also visit the church and cemetery, as well as a variety of interesting activities, such as handmade knitwear and the summer school for traditional crafts, including pottery, mosaics, and weaving. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Day 7 Zlatibor - Belgrade

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure towards the Ovčar-Kablarska Gorge region, home to 14 Serbian monasteries from the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, and the beautiful Morava River gorges. Most of the monasteries had to be built in the remote areas of the country during the Ottoman invasion.
